Saving the Worcester News archives from the skip
Sep 13, 2024 – Chris Wilkinson
This is the fascinating story of how members of the Worcester Civic Society, following a tip-off, rescued a treasure trove of historical material. They saved over 250 bound volumes of Berrows journals, dating from 1805 to the 1990s, along with 120 boxes of clippings and photographs. The collection also included over a million black-and-white and color negatives from 1968 onwards, as well as 1,500 glass plate negatives from 1936 to the mid-1960s.
If not for the quick actions of these members, this invaluable archive would have been lost forever, including many images of local scenes from old Worcester—everything from the 1989 Worcester Carnival to the 1947 Evesham floods. The story, sprinkled with humorous moments, is presented in an engaging, lighthearted talk that brings these fascinating moments of local history to life.
